World Series of Poker Europe History

The WSOPE is the first phase in the international expansion of World Series of Poker tournaments.

This coincides with Harrah’s Entertainment looking to advance the World Series after buying the rights to the Series in 2004.

The company decided to expand the World Series of Poker franchise into Europe after buying LCI, which operates Fifty, Leicester Square and The Sportsman casinos around London.

Because of the difference in style between American and European casinos, WSOP Commissioner, Jeffrey Pollack, said before the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe that it would have a “style and flair both unique and appropriate to the setting.”

There are already many major poker tournaments in Europe, but Pollack cites the prestige of winning a World Series of Poker bracelet as a major drawcard for the WSOPE.

In 2007, Harrah’s announced an alliance with a major online gaming company in the largest ever agreement between an online and offline gaming company.

In the same year, American laws prohibited the WSOP from accepting money from online gambling companies, meaning it cannot recognise qualifiers from online events anymore. However, the World Series of Poker Europe will not be bound by the same laws.
